Top 5 Money Makers
will this help me save energy/save on my electric bill?
i own a refrigerator with a top freezer it has no ice maker and is just a basic refrigerator that we bought brand new in may of 2005 i think it is 18 cu.ft.
a few months ago we bought a 5 cu.ft. chest freezer.
the top freezer is kind of small and we can’t fit everything in there and that is why we bought the chest freezer.
we could fit everything in the chest freezer and not use the top freezer at all.
would this save energy if we were to not use the top freezer?
if you open the fridge and freezer doors you can see the light through the back of the top freezer from the fridge (no light in either freezer).
if we were to stop using the top freezer would we just shut the top freezer off or turn it down since the fridge and freezer portion are not completely sealed off from each other?
i hope i am making sense! we are looking to save money on our electric bill and i know chest freezers are more energy efficient then regular top freezers.
Here’s how you’ll save the most given your configuration:
1. If your fridge and freezer have separate temperature control dials, set the freezer one to as high a temperature as the dial allows. Leave it empty of food, but fill it with empty milk jugs. (Not having empty air space won’t have that much of an impact here – the reason people try not to keep an empty fridge or freezer is that every time you open the door, the cold air falls out, but in your case you’ll probably not open that door ever again!)
2. Make sure you measure the temperature of your fridge and chest freezer to set them to the most energy efficient setting – don’t over-cool either of them. Check monthly. It’s amazing how easily those dials can get knocked out of position by mistake, and suddenly what used to be 0F becomes -13F, costing you a fortune in extra electricity.
3. Check the seals on both fridge and freezer using the dollar bill test. Close the door with the bill half in and half out, in different places. If the bill stays put, you have a good seal. If it moves easily, you’re losing cold air through the bad seal, which will cost you more electricity.
4. If your chest freezer starts to get less full, switch it off, and move stuff back to the fridge freezer. I do this yearly when the frozen fruit supply drops low in winter (since we do a lot of freezing of strawberries, blueberries, peaches etc.).
5. Put a styrofoam cover on the top of your chest freezer. It will help a tiny bit. But don’t cover the sides – fridges and freezers need good air around them, especially newer models which radiate their excess heat all around the exterior. (My freezer is over ten years old and even it heats up to about 90F on the front and sides when it’s running.)
There are lots of other ways you can save electricity in your home – your fridge and freezer, combined, probably account for less than a quarter of your overall electricity use.
